A survey has revealed unexpectedly high levels of interest in cosplay among Japanese women, with some 30% having either tried it or wanting to try it.
The online survey was conducted by market research firm iShare, and asked 565 Japanese men and women aged 20-40 about their attitudes to cosplay.
When both genders were asked whether they had an interest in cosplay, 9.9% answered they would like to try, 8.3% had actually tried it, and 28.5% were interested in watching it but not cosplaying themselves, making for a total of 46.7% with an interest.
However, amongst women the numbers were higher, with 13.6% interested in trying, and 14.7% actually having tried it. Younger women were even more interested, with 15.8% wanting to try amongst those in their twenties.
17.5% of those interested listed anime and manga as the theme of cosplay they would most like to undertake, after which came kigurumi (almost certainly referring to cartoon character suits) with 14.7%, maid and waitress uniforms (12.4%) and military uniforms (also 12.4%).
Top anime subjects for cosplay were Haruhi, Fullmetal Alchemist, as well as visual-kei bands like L’Arc en Ciel.
The white guy in the photo above is Mr. James, the mascot for 4 new burgers of McDonald’s “Nippon All-Stars” series. Residents of Japan who have been riding JR trains or passing by McDonald’s restaurants have probably already seen his face on advertisements. In his TV commercials, Mr. James speaks annoying foreigner Japanese (not unlike the wacky foreigner who spoke NIPPONGO in a recent Sony Commercial). Print advertisements convey his goofy gaijin Japanese by rendering everything he says in katakana.
Mr. James has an official blog chronicling his love for Japan and McDonalds. Its blog posts, no doubt written by a Japanese employee of McDonald’s Japan’s marketing department, put everything in a mix of katakana and hiragana. One blog post contains a special video of Mr. James acting like a moron while reading aloud from a fake Japanese phrasebook [actually an altered version of the book Dirty Japanese].
Judging from this page on his blog, McDonald’s Japan plans to send Mr. James to franchises across the country, allowing him to make lots of blog posts about the places he goes and the people he meets. As of today, he’s only visited Shibuya, but that map should fill up as the campaign gets underway. We can only guess what passing foreigners thought about Mr. James as he stood around handing out fans and speaking wacky broken Japanese.
Not surprisingly, Arudou Debito and the readers of his blog are outraged by the existence of Mr. James. Debito believes that the character reinforces negative stereotypes about foreigners and has compared the actor who plays Mr. James to Stepin Fetchit, a black American who made a became a millionaire in the early 20th century by playing dumb negro characters in Hollywood films. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but the dude certainly is acting like the “jackass” Debito believes him to be.
Complaints can be sent to McDonald’s Japan through this contact information. Or you can go over their heads and complain directly to the U.S. head office of McDonald’s.It would seem that some tests have been conducted to determine which countries have more carriers of thie fear gene and Japan ranked at the top of the list:
According to Ken Y-N, another Japanese TV show (”Otona no Sonata”) also aired a segment this week about how Japanese people posess genes that make them uniquely fearful. On that show, Westerners and Japanese people were shown walking through a haunted house:
“15 out of 15 Japanese were scared, but just one foreigner. A RussianThe gameplay is pretty easy to get specially if you play shooter games like GRADIUS something you don’t see any day anymore in the gaming industry, the control al friendly but they need to add an option so you can change the button configuration in the game.
The game difficulty is pretty high so that something I really liked, but in the next update they need to add a continue system because I only got to stage two. The graphics are good for being a FLASH game so if this game gets some budget it can be a top shooter game.
Storyline like was is pretty interesting its something you can only see in a anime type game.
Character designs are somewhat lack detail, they really need to work on that part so you can attracted a lot more of people to the game.
My final conclusion:
I give it a 8 because of the game play and difficulty, but they need to make it better in the other points I mention before, because the indie gaming industry its pretty competitive specially because I got to know indie games because of the MELTY BLOOD SERIES.
